SimplePractice

Background

SimplePractice is a web-based electronic health record software for health and wellness professionals. Before I joined this project, SimplePractice's in-house design team collaborated with Instrument to create their new brand guidelines. Instrument, an external design agency, did an outstanding job working with the team to develop a new design system.

My Role

I was brought on to implement the new system, working cross-functionally with the brand and web marketing managers to launch the new styles, components, and pages. However, the stylized product UI needed further refinement and additional support to convey all of SimplePractice’s core product features across the website.

Designing product visuals across feature detail pages

For the rebranded website, the web team and I created components to support visual design updates and guide animations on all feature detail pages. The components were designed for flexibility, allowing them to be reused seamlessly across multiple pages. Below is an example of one of the feature detail pages we created, accompanied by storyboards to illustrate functionality and user flow:

Feature #1: Keep Clients on Track

Feature #2: Instantly calculate scores

Feature #3: Visualize client progress

Creating a Design System

With numerous feature detail pages to complete within a tight timeline for the MVP launch, the Associate Creative Director of Web proposed creating a component library to centralize our stylized product UI illustrations. This approach ensured a cohesive visual style and significantly boosted our efficiency.

I developed a set of reusable components, including buttons, cards, form elements, calendar blocks, and modals. Each component was designed with subtle styling details, like rounded edges and unique states, to maintain visual consistency.

Scheduling: Calendar blocks

EHR mobile app: Calendar Feature

Client portal: Chat feature

Final Designs

Here are some of the final feature detail pages where we incorporated the stylized product UI system:

Results

In 5 months since starting the role, the web team and I completed the website redesign in time for the MVP launch. The product UI design system played a key role in ensuring a successful launch:

  • It provided a cohesive look and feel for our brand

  • It streamlined the design process, allowing us to reuse components and storyboards across multiple feature pages
